The LoadDown - 05/16/2011

Not as much to get down(loaded) with this week... it's fairly quiet on certain fronts, but there's still something new for most console owners...

WiiWare -- Back to the recent pattern here with one new release and one free trial version.  Gabrielle's Ghostly Groove: Monster Mix is a comically horror-themed dance game that calls Space Channel 5 to mind with its story approach, though not its visual style.  There's also a free demo of the wildlife sim/game Lead the Meerkats.

Wii Virtual Console -- A big, long-awaited release this week... Square-Enix's 16-bit SNES RPG, Chrono Trigger.

DSiWare -- Three titles this week.  Big Bass Arcade is a fishing game with an important 'B' in the title; Word Searcher 3 is another find-the-word-in-the-matrix-of-letters game; and Hellokids Vol. 1: Coloring and Painting is an electronic coloring book with a palette of tools to play with.

XBox Live Arcade --Two new titles this past week.  Gatling Gears is a steampunk-themed game, yet another XBLA isometric twin-stick shooter; I think it's safe to say that Eugene Jarvis' classic Robotron:2084 has inspired a genre unto itself.  And Atari's Star Raiders remake bears only a generic resemblance to the classic Atari 400/800 game -- the camera is now placed behind the ship, and while the galactic environment is vastly more detailed and quite visually striking, the controls are reportedly poor, and there are lots of unnecessary additions, like (ack!) escort missions.

PS3 on PSN --Yet another quiet week, unusual for this platform; but there are signs of life expected soon.

PSOne Classics -- Nothing new here this week, either.
