The LoadDown - 08/02/2010

New on the downloadable circuit this week...

WiiWare -- Two titles arrive.  Fantasy Slots: Adventure Slots and Games brings video gambling of the slot/fruit machine variety to WiiWare, no real money required.  Deer Captor takes place in a strange world where hunters set out to capture animals using a rifle or crossbow.

Wii Virtual Console -- Nothing new this week.

DSiWare -- Only four titles this week.  Match Up! is basically ConcentrationHints Hunter is a hidden-object game with some innovative use of the DSi's stylus and clock.  Petz Dogz Family continues Ubisoft's virtual pet series, recently occupying a lot of DSiWare release windows.  And BlayzBloo: Super Melee Action Battle Royale is a cute, downsized version of the relatively new BlazBlue fighting franchise.

XBox Live Arcade -- The Summer of Arcade continues with Hydro Thunder Hurricane, a sequel to the Midway arcade racer popular during the Dreamcast era.  It's produced by a company called Vector Unit, so perhaps we're starting to see where some of Midway's intellectual property rights ended up post-bankruptcy.

Game Room -- Steady releases continue.  This week, Game Pack 007 unlocked Activision's Decathlon and Frostbite for the Atari 2600, Auto Racing for the Intellivision, and Atari's 2600 version of Asteroids, arguably redundant given the original coin-op's availability along with Asteroids Deluxe.  The most interesting item is Konami's obscure 1985 coin-op Jail Break, which puts a New York City police officer into a Bloody Wolf-style sidescroller, as he battles armies of prisoners and thugs and tries to avoid shooting hostages.

PS3 on PSN -- A quiet week on the PS3, but it looks like things will pick up a bit in August.
